Term2-Lesson2

Leading the learning

Direct Instruction

The learning intention for this lesson was understanding perceptions, and why people hold certain perceptions about certain things. This follows on from where we have been learning to understand different perspectives. In this lesson the learners had been asked to complete a compare and contrast activity on dragons and princesses, prior to reading the text. The idea behind this was to reveal the students own perceptions about both characters, and then read a text where the characters did not meet these expectations.

Learners working

The second video shows how the learners engaged with the task while they worked on it. They were instructed to sit together and to discuss parts they found tricky or unsure. You can see me at the end of the video where I checked in with the group near the end of the video. This was really interesting because they had missed a key concept needed for the task.

Detailed Plan Here

Reflection/ Next steps

I think the context for this lesson worked really well. Learners had lots of knowledge to apply for both dragons and princesses, and this helped them understand the idea of perceptions. The second video shows how the learners really battled with the task, however because the learners struggled with the concept of a 'wanted poster' the perspective taking element was lost.

Reflection/ Next steps

When watching the Direct instruction video you will notice that the class is really noisy. This was partly the result of call out coming over the loud speaker that the Year 8 rugby team was going to be playing another school today at lunchtime. The class naturally became more 'enthusiastic' during our literacy lesson. Unfortunately this meant our audio wasn't picked up quite as well on the mic.
