Leading the learning

The learning intention for this lesson was learning to, "synthesise information from across multiple texts".

This set of lessons focused on Auckland's Volcanic Field. Specifically, Rangitoto, but also the threat level for another eruption in Auckland in the future. This video shows myself explaining to the learners the instructions and expectations for one of the activities that the students will be working on. This was the second session I had had with the group this week, and they had previously read the two readings necessary for this activity.

Reflection/ Next steps

The learners were very excited by the activity. By the end of the session, I believe all the learners had a good idea what a brochure was and what information they would need to include in their brochure. Next time I think it might be a good idea to bring along a couple of brochures as examples. The brochure task took the learners longer to create than I expected. Some of them found it difficult to imagine how it should look, and stuck very close to the template. I would like to repeat this task again sometime, but perhaps simplify it.

Things to note

At school this week we are just about to go on camp, and because of this there has been quite a few disruptions. Some learners will need to catch up the work after camp week. Therefore some of links to the learners work are not currently working.

1. Please read all instructions carefully, both on this site and in docs. 2. Read the text "Secrets of Rangitoto Island" - Talk about this text with a member of your group. You will have to discuss it with your whole group soon with the teacher. 3. Read the "Fuller Ferry" text and begin the Brochure tasks. There is a lot of writing in these tasks so be careful to check your punctuation and sentences. - Complete both sides of the brochure and share on your blog. - Remember to use Free to use images, and also provide attribution. 4. Read the texts "Aucklands Volcanic Risk" and "Volcanic Hazards". - Using the information from both these texts you will need to create a postcard to send to a friend. Explain in your Postcard what the Volcanic risks are for living in Auckland. 5. The Youtube video is a simulated event (this means it's not real). - It however is an accurate example of what might happen if there was infact an eruption like this on this in Auckland.
