Introduction to Human Service and Education (Intro to HSE)
Recommended Grade Level: 9-10 grade
Length of Course: 1/2 Semester (90 Minute Block)
Course Description: Students will experience how the concepts of communication, ethics, leadership and teamwork relate to the Human Services and Education Career Field. Students will consider these concepts as applied to their multiple roles of family member, wage earner and citizens. Clusters to be explored in this career field are: (1) Human Services, (2) Government and Public Administration, (3) Law, Public Safety and Security and (4) Education and Training.
Program of Study: The first course in any Human Services and Resources Program of study
FCS 3.1 Evaluate different methods of communication.
3.1.1 Define communication.
3.1.2 Analyze various methods of communication (verbal, auditory, written, non-verbal, and technological)
3.1.3 Investigate cultural issues and differences in communication.
3.2 Demonstrate communication skills that contribute to positive interactions as a family member, wage earner, and citizen.
3.2.1 Practice effective techniques of communication being sensitive to contextual and cultural differences.
3.2.2 Compare and contrast communication in a variety of settings (teams, peers, work settings, teacher/student, parent/child, boss/employee, age appropriate).
3.2.3 Apply problem-solving strategies in conflict resolution.
3.3 Apply critical thinking and problem solving processes in addressing ethical issues and legal responsibilities in the workplace, the community and within one’s personal life.
3.3.1 Compare and contrast the meaning of morals, ethics, and values.
3.3.2 Compare own values and code of ethics to the ethics of society (culture, influences).
3.3.3 Self assess (evaluate and analyze) one’s own behavior related to ethical decisions.
3.3.4 Identify the influences of individual ethics in relation to career, work skills, community relations and in one’s personal life.
3.3.5 Analyze and interpret ethical knowledge in life situation (i.e. scams, fraudulent behaviors)
3.3.6 Evaluate how ethics have changed into law over time.
3.3.7 Become aware of laws and the consequences of unethical behavior by researching and presenting case studies of such acts.
3.4 Demonstrate leadership and teamwork skills required for success in the family, workplace, and community.
3.4.1 Develop a definition and philosophy of leadership.
3.4.2 Define and describe teamwork skills.
3.4.3 Explore leadership roles and teamwork skills in the family, workplace and community.
3.4.4 Organize team building experiences that provide individual leadership opportunities.
3.4.5 Exercise respect and adaptability in collaborating with others.
3.4.6 Apply problem solving strategies in leadership and teamwork experiences.
3.4.7 Participate in community leadership and teamwork opportunities to enhance skills.
3.5 Examine the information technology application and issues regarding safety, health, and the environment found in the workplaces related to this career field and in situations related to the family and community.
3.5.1 Use a variety of technologies to search for and access information and manage records for family, work and community settings.
3.5.2 Use technology to analyze, manipulate, and interpret information.
3.5.3 Identify adequate, reliable information and resources.
3.5.4 Demonstrate responsibility required within the physical and social environments of the family, workplace and community in order to reduce conflict and promote safety.
3.5.5 Identify reporting agencies and describe the importance of documentation and reporting emergency or crisis situations to the appropriate authorities.
3.6 Explore career opportunities within the Human Services and Resources Career Field.
3.6.1 Investigate the career clusters within the Human Services and Resources Career Field.
3.6.2 Assess personal knowledge, attitudes, skills, aspirations and characteristics.
3.6.3 Identify specific careers which align to personal assessments.
3.6.4 Examine educational requirements, job opportunities, demand, and wage and benefit potential for selected careers.
3.6.5 Evaluate programs of study, school and community activities relative to career choices.
3.6.6 Reassess the Personal Learning Plan and revise, if needed, to reflect current thinking.
While researching careers in HSE, students created a Pic-Lit/Picnik of what they believe the message is behind the "Pursuit of Happyness".
Students create the "Leadership Pot"--students take a broken pot and use leadership skills to put it back together; pieces of tape represent positive leadership traits.
