Exploratory 7th Grade Weekly Lesson Plans
1/2 of a semester (45 min. period)
Course Description: Students will have the opportunity to explore family and consumer sciences areas of personal development, communication, relationships, foods and nutrition. This is a hands-on course filled with project based unit assessments. Students will find themselves busy learning about family and themselves while setting goals and enhancing their communication and conflict resolution skills. Students will also have the opportunity to evaluate their own nutritional needs and learn how to prepare nutritious foods/meals safely.
FCS 1.1 Analyze the “work of the family” and the effect it has individuals and society.
1.1.1 Compare and contrast how family responsibilities are met within differing family types, structures, and cultures
1.1.2 Examine the role of the family in developing independence, interdependence and commitment of family members throughout the life cycle
1.1.3 Identify ways to strengthen the family as the basic unit of society
FCS 1.2 Demonstrate respectful and caring relationships in the family, with peers and in the community.
1.2.1 Demonstrate positive communication skills that contribute to healthy relationships
1.2.2 Demonstrate effective conflict prevention and management techniques
FCS 1.3 Identify and demonstrate skills needed to develop and strengthen interpersonal relationships.
1.3.1 Examine traits and personal characteristics and the effect they have on self-esteem and personal relationships
1.3.2 Illustrate how values impact goals and the decision making process
FCS 1.4 Demonstrate nutrition and wellness practices that enhance individual and family well-being.
1.4.1 Evaluate the nutritional needs of individuals according to the food guide pyramid
1.4.2 Demonstrate ability to acquire, safely handle and prepare foods to meet personal nutrition and wellness needs in a teamwork setting
1.4.3 Demonstrate table setting and dining etiquette
FCS 1.5 Investigate opportunities to enhance leadership skills.
1.5.1 Demonstrate characteristics and strategies that motivate, encourage, and build trust among group members
1.5.2 Identify areas of life where leadership may be practiced
