Early Childhood Education II Recommended Grade Level: 11-12 grade
Length of Course: 1/2 Semester (90 Minute Block)
Course Description: This course is designed for students planning to pursue a degree in Early Childhood. This course will examine the various types of early childhood programs and the license requirements related to each, program planning and evaluation, and working with special needs children. Hands-on experience with young children will also be included. This course will be offered concurrently with Early Childhood I as independent study with the following prerequisites: Human Growth and Development, Child Care and Parenting, Early Childhood I.

FCS 7.1 Distinguish between the various types of early childhood programs and the licensure requirements related to each.
7.1.1 Describe the requirements (training, education, professionalism, compensation, and certification requirements) for selected early childhood occupation setting.
7.1.2 Differentiate between the state/federal requirements for Family Child Care Home I, Family Child Care Home II, Child Care Center, Head Start Programs, and school-operated Early Childhood Programs
7.1.3. Identify the certification opportunities in the Early Childhood Education field; e.g. CDA, teacher certification
FCS 7.2 Integrate knowledge, skills and practices required for careers in early childhood education and services.
7.2.1 Describe the roles and functions of individuals engaged in early childhood education and services
7.2.2 Describe the types of programs for group care of children
7.2.3 Identify factors that promote quality in child care settings
7.2.4 Create an employment portfolio for use with applying for internships and work-based learning opportunities in early childhood education
7.2.5 Investigate and demonstrate skills and procedures necessary for seeking and retaining employment
FCS 7.3 Analyze factors that influence child growth and development to age 8, through observation and reflection.
7.3.1 Analyze principles of human growth and development from birth to age 8, through observation and reflection.
7.3.2 Observe, identify, and reflect upon basic physical, cognitive, social/emotional, and language developmental milestones of children
7.3.2 Analyze conditions (heredity vs environment) (social, economic, technological) that influence human growth and development.
FCS 7.4 Demonstrate knowledge of curriculum and instruction to meet children’s’ developmental needs and interests.
7.4.1 Read and reflect upon Nebraska Early Learning Guidelines
7.4.2 Identify and describe the basic elements of curriculum and daily routine
7.4.3 Develop effective curriculum and instructional materials for varying ages, abilities, interest
7.4.4 Use technology in a variety of ways within the early childhood setting
7.4.5 Implement learning activities in all curriculum areas that meet the developmental needs of children, including children with disabilities
7.4.6 Demonstrate a variety of teaching methods to meet individual needs of children, including children with disabilities
FCS 7.5 Through observation and reflection, demonstrate an awareness of the diversity of children, including those with special needs will be demonstrated.
7.5.1 Identify risk factors, delays, or disabilities that may indicate a need for special services and referral processes
7.5.2 Describe community resources available to families
FCS 7.6 Review and describe the ethics and professional expectations of the variety of career opportunities within the Early Childhood profession.
7.6.1 Read and reflect upon Level I and Level II in the Nebraska Core Competencies: Professionalism & Leadership
7.6.2 Describe the appropriate dress, behaviors, and ethics of the profession
7.6.3 Complete certification in infant/child CPR and first aid (pediatric)
