3. LOWERN OLD: Factors Affecting Climate & Weather

LESSON #1:

FACTORS THAT AFFECT GLOBAL CLIMATE

TASK #1: LOWERN Activity sheet

Note for Teachers: Do not copy and distribute the 3rd page.

Complete part 2, then review, then post.

1) Use the handout to complete sheets 1 and 2

- DO NOT LOOK AT THE THIRD AS IT IS THE ANSWER KEY!!!!

PART 2 : READ AND LEARN

L.O.W.E.R.N:

6 KEY FACTORS THAT CAN AFFECT CLIMATE PATTERNS WORLDWIDE :

1. L atitude: your distance north or south of the equator impacts climate

2. O cean currents: winds blow over warm currents and onto land

3. W inds and air masses: move weather systems across the continents

4. E levations (altitude): height above sea level

5. R elief: the physical topography (landforms and shapes of land)

6. N ear water: large bodies (oceans/great lakes) of water moderate the temperatures of nearby

land (Vancouver) (not to hot not to cold).

- Generally called coastal or maritime regions when only near oceans.

- Some exceptions to exist: The Great Lakes do not freeze completely in the winter.

Air passing over the water can be warmed and it then warms the land somewhat

as it passes over it.
