Do some independent research and answer the following questions
about the oil found in Alberta in the sand.
1. What is the difference between the “Oil Sands” and “Tar Sands?
What is the meaning behind the different wording?
Explain why some people would want to use different names for the same thing.
2 . Where are the oil sands located (be specific about location), there are more
than one.
What is the largest oil sand deposit called?
3. How/when were the oil sands formed? Pretend you are explaining it to a kid in
grade 2.
Be sure they would understand all the words you would use. Explain where needed.
4. How is the extraction and refining of this Oil a good thing? How does the industry
benefit Canadians?
There are many areas that benefit so be sure to explore more than one...
5. How is the extraction and refining of this Oil a bad thing?
What do some see as problems associated with oil found mixed with sand? What are
the issues?
There is more than one. Name them and explain what they are, who or what they affect
in a small paragraph.
5. Who are the people involved in the different Issues, be sure to name the sides of the
different issues and what the issue is.
6. What is the Keystone Pipeline Project. Answer in detail
7. What do the opponents say about the Keystone Project? What are the issues
surrounding it.
8. What is Canada proposing to do if Keystone does not happen?
9. After all your research is done, you need to pick (a side: ) one of these questions to
answer....
