During the week of March 27, a memorandum was sent to Senior Leadership describing University-wide actions currently underway to maintain the financial health of NYU as the result of the spread of COVID-19. Administrative hiring pause, faculty hiring review and restriction on discretionary OTPS spend were put into place upon issuance of this memo. In a communication to Full-Time Faculty on April 2, the Provost also outlined some guidance on faculty hiring and the suspension of some spending from faculty research funds. Travel restrictions were also addressed in this memo along with other details regarding tenure review, sabbaticals and research. The VP for Research also issued guidance on March 20 and early April about the suspension of non-essential research. Finally, a separate communication issued by the Wasserman Center outlined the current approach regarding student employment and how it is impacted by the temporary hiring pause. As the communication already stated, certain Summer 2020 student positions can be posted at this time however none will be appointed until further guidance being provided towards the end of April.

With all of these communications being issued within a short period of time it is understandable that many questions and requests for clarifications have arisen. We expect the FAQ document will answer many of your questions or provide guidance on timelines as to when decisions regarding Summer and Fall will be made. However it is also expected that you may have unique exceptions that require specific review. This document also contains contact information allowing you to reach out to the appropriate parties for further guidance or approval regarding research, student employment, or the administrative hiring pause.

As the current situation progresses there will be further communication and answers to questions may evolve. Thank you again for your efforts, cooperation and patience during these unprecedented times.
