Computer Crashes and Data Recovery/Back-up

Dear Departments All,

As the semester begins, we would like to inform you of the best course of action for computer crashes and hard drive failures. Please forward this email to applicable faculty and administrators.

Should you suffer a failure and need to recover lost data for an NYU-purchased device, please contact FAS Computing for recovery options before incurring any expense(fas.computing@nyu.edu, 212.998.3555). FAS Computing can provide support as well as recommended NYU-approved vendors, such as Kroll On Track.

Please do NOT immediately go to the Apple store and/or ship your device to a vendor that does not have a prior relationship with NYU. The cost of some vendors can be 2 to 3 times more than NYU’s negotiated prices.

To avoid the possibility of data loss, please be sure to always back up your data through various redundancies, for example through an external drive AND a cloud-based platform. NYU has various options available to you for data backup, including NYU Box and Google Drive. External drives can be purchased through iBuy via B&H, Best Buy, or Staples. FAS Computing can also provide more options and individualized solutions.
