I to J: Balmorhea, TX to Marfa, TX

January 6, 2010

We woke up with the sun on the shores of Lake Balmorhea, where Buzz was happy to stretch her legs and get a drink of water before driving south to explore the Davis Mountains. We made it to Fort Davis and decided to continue on to Marfa, which was only 22 miles further. Besides our kind camp host in Fredericksburg's suggestion to see the Marfa lights, we had been enjoying the public radio station coming out of Marfa, TX and figured we could stop in for a visit. We found the offices of 93.5 Marfa Public Radio and showed our support by buying t-shirts and stickers. Based on the recommendation of one of the staff members at the radio station, we had lunch at the Food Shark, toured the minimalist art Chinati Foundation and then headed out to the Marfa Lights Viewing Center. We did witness a beautiful sunset and saw what we thought were the Marfa lights, but Max keeps insisting that they were just highway lights. We had met a kind person at El Cosmico, a motel featuring restored Airstream Trailers as rooms, who gave us a tour of the property and let us shower before the pipes froze as they were predicted to that night. We headed over to Padre's, a converted funeral parlor turned into a bar and enjoyed their game room and Frito pie, before we buckled down for our coldest night yet with the goal to wake up early and make it to White Sands National Monument before going to Arizona.
