Getting ready to head east in Eugene, OR (Thanks to Beth Naylor for the fun picture)

Sportsmobile

We spent our Winter Road Trip 2009/2010 traveling in our recently purchased 1988 Ford Econoline 250 Sportsmobile Conversion with a Penthouse Top. We found it on Craigslist in Yuba City, CA.

After a few months of work, Max had installed new 3/4" Oak floors, a hand built storage compartment in the back and a new shelf for the main cabin. We also made new curtains to cover up the pink velour originals.

It handled the 10,000 mile trip like a dream. The radiator did freeze in Laramie, WY and then almost overheated when we drove into Florida and hadn't removed the piece of cardboard that we had placed in front of the radiator to keep the cold winds off of it. The roof also took on about a gallon of water during a rainstorm in New Jersey, but after a fun day at Sportsmobile in Austin we drove away with new fiberglass, weatherstripping and Sportsmobile Logo Stickers. We also got to meet the founder of Sportsmobile, who showed us photographs of the original prototypes from 1961.
