J to K to L to M: Mystic, CT to Hills Creek State Park, PA to Bay City, MI to Greenbush, MI

8.1.10 - 8.3.10

Knowing we wanted to avoid the traffic jam prone I-95 in Connecticut, we cut up to I-84 and drove west into New York state. We found a good diner in Scranton for burgers and started our journey across the Pennsylvania "Wilds" on US-6 - "The Grand Army of the Republic" Highway. The beautiful road let us through hills and forests to Hills Creek State Park near Wellsboro, PA for the night. It was crowded, but was our best bet as all the free campgrounds on State Forest property required an application form that couldn't be processed on a Sunday. After showers in the morning we left Hills Creek SP by 8:30am and continued our progress along US-6 until it connected with I-90 near Erie, PA. After stopping to resupply and trying the unrecommend-able local "Halo Burgers" chain in Flint, MI, we stopped for the night to get eaten alive by mosquitoes at the Bay City Recreation Area in Bay City, MI. The nearby bay wasn't very swimming-friendly, so after the sun set and we were tired of having our bitten, we went to sleep. The next morning we had a refreshingly good meal at the Bay Cafe and called our only friend in Michigan. She recently had returned from a trip herself and was excited to see us, so we drove the short drive on US 23 along Lake Huron to Greenbush, MI - slogan: "People Loving People". We spent a lovely afternoon fishing and swimming and feeling like we really were on vacation.
