Bitter Lemons

8.14.10

After a quiet morning, we drove out Nicosia towards the coast. We feasted in Paralimni at the lovely beach side apartment of one of my dad's coworkers. We thought we were only going for lunch! We were served chicken with potatoes, bulghar pilaf, roasted pork, greens, salad, watermelon and haloumi cheese (my new favorite goat/sheep's cheese) and lemon cake and coffee. The food was delicious and our hosts were welcoming and so friendly. Too full to go swimming, we drove to the north to visit the seaside town of Keryneia and nearby Bellapais, a small village lived in and written about by Lawrence Durell in Bitter Lemons. The village looked very close to how he had described it, yet it had been converted to be more tourist friendly over the past half century. It just didn't seem right to eat at the "Tree of Idleness" restaurant. We did have some lemonade at the restaurant now occupying half of the Abbey and watched the sunset over Keryneia.
