N to O: Sparrow Rapids, MI to Turtle River State Park, ND

8.7.10

It was hard to get up and out, as we both were hoping that Buzz would suddenly appear and we could stop being so painfully upset. We really hadn't thought enough about how hard it would be to have her die, and having her disappear into thin air seemed even worse. But she didn't come back, so we headed back out to US 2 and west towards Ironwood to eat at Joe's Pasties - "Da first in da U.P. eh!" (pasty rhymes with nasty, but tastes anything but). We opted for both the traditional (beef) and a breakfast (eggs and bacon). Max spotted a St. Vincent de Paul thrift store that happened to be having a $3 bag sale and we stocked up on collared shirts for him, and purses for Emily. Score. After driving straight through Wisconsin, Emily wanted to stop in Bemidji, MN to take pictures of Paul Bunyan and Babe on the lakeside promenade, which happened to be the site of the annual Dragon Boat Festival. We had missed all the races that day, but there were still delicious bison burgers to sample. Trying to cover as many miles as possible, we drove the rest of the way straight through Minnesota to North Dakota, where we stopped for groceries in Grand Fork and camped a bit further along US 2 at Turtle River State Park. It was crowded, not very secluded, full of mosquitoes and didn't seem worth the $25 we paid to stay there. We comforted ourselves by saying that Buzz would have hated it there. We missed her a lot.
