Description: Soroptimist was formed in 1921 in Oakland, California, at a time when women were not permitted to join service organizations. Our name, loosely translated from the Latin, means best for women. Today, we have about 72,000 members and supporters in 121 countries and territories. We are one of five federations that make up Soroptimist International.

When women and girls are educated, they have opportunity, choice, and power to make healthy decisions for themselves and their families.
We offer a $1000 scholarship to a young woman in her senior year at Mendocino High School, planning to attend college and seeking a career that can help themselves and other women achieve economic empowerment.
Financial Need is the primary criteria for the “Shine” award. Applicants must include a FAFSA (Federal Financial Aid form) along with their scholarship application materials.
Details: Amount: $1,000. (This will be paid directly to the educational institution upon proof of enrollment.)
Requirements: A 2024 Local Scholarship application, a FAFSA (or similar form), an essay explaining both financial need and future plans that would fulfil the Soroptimist mission described above, and two letters of recommendation from teachers, counselors, coaches, and/or employers describing applicant’s character, work ethic, and financial need if known.
