Eugene “Foggy” Gomes Scholarship

The Mendocino Volunteer Fire Department, Inc. is pleased to invite applications for the Eugene "Foggy" Gomes Scholarship. This scholarship OF UP TO $1,500 will be offered to an individual who is or has graduated from Mendocino Unified School District or a young person in the community. Priority will be given to those intending to obtain training in and work in the field of fire protection or emergency medical services.

 

Applicants for the Foggy Gomes Scholarship must meet the following criteria:

1. Applicants who intend to pursue a career in fire science will be given first priority for award of the scholarship. Applicants who intend to pursue a career as a paramedic will be given second priority for award of the scholarship, in the event that no applications are received by students intending to study fire science. If there are no applications from students entering the fields of fire science or EMS, the committee may use its discretion to award the scholarship to another deserving student or students pursuing other careers.

2. Maintenance of a high school grade point average of at least 2.0.

3. Submission of a completed Local Scholarship Application by the application deadline as set by the School District. All applicants must furnish a social security number.

 

The Scholarship Committee shall consider the above criteria in awarding the scholarship, and shall also take into account each applicant's financial need and service to the community.

 

The Scholarship Committee reserves its rights to take the following actions, in its discretion:

1. Personal interview of applicants. If a personal interview is required, the Committee will notify the applicants and schedule a convenient meeting time.

2. If no applications are received, the Committee may elect to withhold the scholarship until the following year.

3. Scholarship funds shall be paid to the recipient upon receipt of proof of enrollment in an appropriate course of study. The Committee may, in its sole discretion, award half the funds at the beginning of the course of study, and half the funds mid way through the course of study, upon proof of continued enrollment and proof of good standing.
