Blog post for June 8, 2016
People have already asked me, “What is it like to be retired?” I feel a little foolish: I don’t know how to answer. So, here are my top 5 reasons for why I don’t have a good answer yet.
1. First, I’m STILL decluttering! I took two more tubs to Stuff, our local consignment store, last week. I have been going through drawers and closets, trying to find things I don’t need that I can get rid of, as well as organizing projects for the rest of the year, such as collecting ALL of the photos that need sorting, scanning, placing in albums, etc.
2. Second, I just finished cleaning out my office at college last week.
3. Third, I turned in my Suckow chapter (ahead of the June 1st deadline).
4. Fourth, I started babysitting two little boys--and one large, needy dog--one day a week, which is like channeling Julie, the Love Boat’s Activity Director, with a little Julie Andrews (aka Mary Poppins) thrown in for good measure.
5. So far, then, it just feels like the first few weeks of my regular “summer off!”
Okay, here are five things I am ANTICIPATING over the next three to six months--
1. First, having time to read—and write.
2. Second, not taking a month of my summer to update syllabi, handouts, and websites for the fall: so, this will really be my first summer off.
3. Third, having only ONE office space (and figuring out how to simplify it for efficiency) as I begin work on the next writing projects. I am trying to reimagine the space and may need to call in some of my friends for their expertise (and enlist my son and a friend for their muscle power).
4. Fourth, doing some traveling—with friends, family, and my sweetie. We have several trips planned this summer, the first one in a few weeks, another one in August, and some vague ideas for later on.
5. Finally, I will be participating in the Cedar Falls Christian Writers’ Workshop, coming up in about ten days. It is always a blessing! I learn a lot and hope to be of help to a few people needing a little help with technology issues.
Hope your summer is getting off to a great start! Check back soon for a big announcement!
