Blog post for the week of October 10, 2015
Here is a print screen from one of my video lessons for my Technology class, showing my very high classroom, iMovie on my iPad, and VGA connectors that let me project the image on my iPad up the big screens on the back wall and upfront.
We just moved the iPad tray, holding ten iPads, to the Library building so that teachers can use them with students in our building. My Literature students had fun with our pilot test, so we are loading them up with a few apps this week.
Next week is week 8, Mid-Term! We already did something called Early Alerts at Hawkeye.
(I sometimes call them Early Panic, because it can be a real wakeup call for some students struggling to get to class or to do the work).
10. Showing up for class is the single most important factor to success, and a predictor of whether or not you will pass the class.
9. Coming prepared (doing the reading and doing the assignments) goes hand in hand with attendance.
8. Emailing me periodically with why you aren’t coming or doing the work is not the same as showing up; however, it is important to communicate with me, and I know that all of us have family and personal crises from time to time.
7. Not all online or face to face students know how to navigate the class website, download assignments, create folders, or change a file name. (So much for the assumption of digital natives; sometimes, I feel like an Digital Skills ESL teacher for students of all ages who lack the basic technology skills that are needed to be successful in today's classroom and many careers)
6. Adapting to a new Course management System takes time; however, I had no idea that I would have invested 400 hours in my five Canvas courses at week 7!
5. Paradox: my Composition 2 course focuses on technology and the problems created by digital distraction, social media obsession, and our fixation with our mobile devices. I walk around my computer classroom to see every student has his or her smartphone on the desk, within easy reach!
4. One of the quietest students I have ever had is one of the best writers I have this semester, and she can be very opinionated, funny, and candid.
3. After fiddling with the Apple TV device and replacing some of the hardware, I can finally walk around my classroom in Black Hawk Hall and project what I have on my iPad up on the big screen. What a thrill!
2. So much of what we do now relies on technology: student records are online as is our attendance reports and grades. We keep our gradebooks on Canvas, the new CMS, even though some of us are still figuring them out and are not sure the percent students see are accurate.
1. If so much of what we do is online, how do I end up with so much paper in my office at work and home?
