In one of my classrooms (to) and in my office (bottom)
Hawkeye Center -- where students find the bookstore, Student Services, the Testing Center, Business Office, etc.
Top Ten Things I LOVE about heading back to the classroom
I teach at Hawkeye Community College and here is what I like about the first week of classes.
1. Getting new school supplies – including free pens from the College!
2. Wearing new school clothes
3. Getting back into the routine
4. Seeing friends – faculty and staff alike – and catching up
5. Seeing technology upgrades done in the classrooms over the summer
6. Finally getting motivated to clean up my office
7. Having that sense of starting over – a fresh slate, with the promise of making fewer mistakes, keeping up with grading, and keeping a positive attitude
8. Meeting new students (I've been working on handouts and websites for weeks in preparation for class, but without students, it wouldn't be much fun!)
9. Students actually looking at me and listening in the classroom (at least for the first week)
10. Seeing students from previous semesters who are doing well (and sometimes taking another class with me)
Top Ten Reasons the First Week is so exhausting
1. Getting up too early!
2. Remembering where I‘m supposed to be, with schedule changes & new room numbers
3. Trying to learn my students’ names
4. Feeling so prepped -- and then making a list of things that need to be done
5. Figuring out what to wear with cool mornings and warm afternoons
6. Fighting with the Departmental printer
7. Figuring out how to grade with our new online course management system
8. Wondering how I got errands and laundry done last semester
9. Opening file cabinet drawers and seeing more to sort out and organize
10. Keeping up with the Adds/Drops and figuring out the most recent class list
If you're a teacher or a student, I hope your first week back goes well.
