In England around 1840, families were really poor so everybody in the family had to work.
Whole families worked in the mines. Families were really big. Often they had 9 or 10 children. Children would start working in the mines at 5 years old.
The younger kids did the easiest jobs, and the older kids did more dangerous work. Kids worked up to 12 hours a day with few breaks and no fresh air :
The mines were very dangerous. Tunnels would flood or collapse or there would be explosions and kids could be burned. If they got hurt they couldn’t work anymore and they wouldn’t get paid.
The children’s never saw the daylight, except on Sunday.
In 1842,the Commission into Children’s Employment in Mines took place and the Mines and Collieries Act.
This meant that boys could only work after ten years old and girls couldn’t work at all.
It helped a lot,but the major problem of poor conditions remained for older boys and men who remained in the industry.
