AI, or Artificial Intelligence, can perform tasks that typically require human intelligence
These tasks can include things like problem-solving, learning from experience, understanding natural language, and recognizing patterns
Think of them as 'generators' because they generate visuals or text to match the prompt, they are not sentient (living)
They DO NOT understand you, they are just generating the string of words or pictures that most likely match the prompt you give them.
AI in Everyday Technology
You probably use AI in your daily life without even realizing it. AI powers voice assistants like Siri and Alexa, social media algorithms that recommend content, and even video game characters that behave intelligently
AI requires coding and is not 'alive'
AI can be considered a well-built program with coding. Some AI tools can access databases to create answers or solutions the creator did not originally program into them. This is what sets AI apart from other coding programs
AI is not 'alive' and it can't fully understand what it is doing, but it can feel that way to us because it was coded so well
AI is not perfect either
AI can inherent biases (opinions/judgment/prejudice) from the database it reads, leading to unfair or incorrect answers
AI is also not truly creative, it just combines already-made ideas/pictures. Artists are claiming that some AI tools are stealing their artwork
AI has also been found to hallucinate and make up wrong answers that it says are correct
AI also does not have common sense or human morality, so it is important to remember this and not to trust AI answers fully
Why should I care about AI?
AI is only going to get more powerful and widespread
AI is being used to scam and impersonate other people, so I need to be careful
AI is making humans believe they don't have to think anymore. This is not true! You should use AI to help, but don't let AI use you

What you type into an AI is called a PROMPT
You can 'engineer' your prompts to get better responses from AI. Here are the basics of engineering an AI prompt:
SETUP: tell the AI its role, or information about your position to help with the command or question
COMMAND or QUESTION: ask the AI to perform a task or search for information from its databases (it may be incorrect so double-check on other sites)
REFINE or FOLLOWUP: you can have the AI perform a follow-up action or give it more instructions to control how it should answer
COPY and PASTE the example prompts on the right into ChatGPT. Read through the responses, if ChatGPT's responses are too long, you can reply with "Can you please summarize that for me?" and ChatGPT should make it shorter/easier to understand

Pretend I’m a middle school student learning about AI for the first time. Please explain how AI uses data to learn, and include examples from three fields (medicine, education, and entertainment). Answer in a summarized paragraph. Then, list examples of how AI can help students with studying. Thank you
Prompt 2
You are an AI for a middle school STEM class. Please explain why your students need to be aware of the dangers of AI, and how to spot them. Provide your response in one short paragraph with bullet points for key tips. Thank you
Prompt 3
1 - Tell the AI your likes, dislikes, and what classes you are good at (try to include everything you can think of!) After listing your abilities/preferences, ask for a list of possible career options
2 - After ChatGPT responds with a list, tell it which option is your favorite and ask what steps you need to take to get there!
(adding "Please" and "Thank you" might prevent the robot revolution 😬)
