Lesson 4:
Internet Safety
Determine if a Website is Secure/Credible:
SECURE
Is your personal data protected from hackers?
http:// is UNSECURED/NOT SAFE with personal information
https:// means it uses encryption to protect your data
CREDIBLE
Can you trust the information you're reading?
.org/.gov/.edu - most likely trustworthy information
if it is .com - they are trying to sell something
(.com is short for commercial)
If you have a free account anywhere...YOUR DATA is being tracked and collected
the app/website will then sell your data to make money off of you
(TikTok is THE WORST about this)
TERMS & CONDITIONS
A LEGALLY PROTECTED CONTRACT of what App companies will do with your personal data
they purposely make the contracts really long so that you just skip reading them and accept/agree to the terms
IF YOU AGREE TO IT:
the app companies can now record your camera, microphone, camera roll, and location to build a profile about you
these profiles are supposed to give you more 'targeted ads' (advertisements that match your interests based on the data the app companies have collected)
WHY DOES THIS MATTER?
Terms & Conditions can hide some seriously concerning protections for an app/company
(look at the screenshot on the right)
-ALSO-
hackers can infiltrate app databases to find your data
(or pictures 😬)
and BLACKMAIL you
They can also access your camera and spy on you without you knowing!
How does all of this affect you?
watch all three videos
1 - You are always being watched
2 - Social media/ad companies want you on your phone all the time
that's how free apps make money
3 - People are purposely putting false information on the internet
This example shows how even big-name news websites can share incorrect information
Do not fall for a TROLL TRAP
Trolls are people on the internet who like to mess with other people for fun (that's rude!)
Troll traps are false informational posts meant to mislead you
Some troll traps are just to mislead you about a topic, while others are meant to harm you (like a computer virus)
One example is on the right: hackers accessed all of Apple's iCloud accounts and sent them this email pretending to be Apple, tricking them about their new phones being able to charge in the microwave
thousands of people melted their new iPhones in the microwave because they believed this troll trap
(sharp metal creates sparks in a microwave, which can ignite and explode the battery)
