Proper nutrition, eating a variety of foods and maintaining a healthy weight, have key benefits to supporting the immune system function of individuals with HIV/AIDS. Of utmost importance is education on food and water safety, as individuals with HIV infections are highly susceptible to foodborne illness. In addition, many patients with HIV/AIDS are unable to meet their RDA levels for micronutrients, so vitamin and mineral supplements are recommended, especially calcium and vitamin D.
