- Understand the role of MNT for chronic kidney disease in maintaining nutritional status, slowing progression and treating complications.
- Differentiate stages of kidney disease and appropriate nutrition care for each stage.
The kidneys perform many crucial functions which include maintaining fluid balance, regulating and filtering minerals and waste from the blood, and creating hormones that support RBC production, bone health and blood pressure regulation. THe overall prevalence of chronic kidney disease is about 14% in the general population, with more than 661,000 Americans with kidney failure (as of 2016) (NIDDK US). Many of these patients suffer from co-morbid conditions such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease, which increases the complexity in providing care for these patients.
