This activity reviews plasma membrane composition and demonstrates how the concentration of ions and molecules in the intracellular and extracellular fluid change during membrane transport. It requires students to depict concentration gradients across the membrane and show how and why it changes during the different types of membrane transport. After an introduction to membranes and transport students were given this activity to complete independently followed by a discussion which sometimes included a demonstration. Anecdotal student feedback stated that they preferred trying to figure out the composition of the membrane and membrane transport themselves after a brief introduction versus lecture only.Â
