First Year Experience

The First Year Experience (FYE) program is a student success program for first year students. Participating students will receive guaranteed English and Math classes for the year. In addition to guaranteed courses, students will receive early course enrollment dates for the year

Chem 10 Challenge Exam (for placing out of Chem 10 and enrolling directly in Chem 11)

You can take the Chem 10 Challenge exam and if you pass, you will be allowed to enroll in Chem 11. More info is found here:

Note: Any students currently enrolled in Chem 10 or who have withdrawn with a W from Chem 10 are ineligible for the challenge exam. Retesting is permitted after a waiting period of two weeks from the date the test was first taken. After that, retesting is permitted once every calendar year, provided you have NOT started taking a Chem 10 course.

Chromebooks and Wifi resources

Free Chromebooks @ SMC

Please work with your students to find out who might need this additional support and then follow these easy steps:

  1. Remind them that they can request a Chromebook through the GPS portal. Go to the GPS webpage to find out more!

  2. Students requesting Chromebooks may also contact their faculty, Counselor, special program staff, or college personnel directly.

  3. The Faculty/College Personnel will forward the student's name and email to Elease Juarez. JUAREZ_ELEASE@smc.edu

  4. Once approved, Elease or staff will call or send the student an email to pick-up the item.

  5. Please know: Students must sign the SMC Equipment Loan Agreement when picking up the Chromebook from the northeast side window of the Campus Store -Bookstore

WiFi is essential for student success

Currently enrolled students are welcome to come onto the main SMC campus to use the campus WiFi.
(They must follow all COVID safety protocols to do so.)


Where to find FREE WiFi in Los Angeles County

  • Free WiFi in Santa Monica Locator WiFi Locator Tool Additional spots are near bus stops, on some Big Blue Buses and near libraries.

  • SMC WiFi Area at Bundy Campus East Parking Lot – When semesters are in session (excluding campus holidays)

How to Access WiFi

  1. Currently enrolled SMC students may come to the main SMC campus to access SMC’s WiFi
    (follow all campus COVID safety protocols)
    or

  2. Visit Bundy Campus East Parking Lot from Monday – Friday, 8 a.m. – 10 p.m.

  3. You must be a currently enrolled SMC student.

  4. See a Parking Enforcement Officer (PEO) at the Bundy campus for a permit.

  5. Log in with your SMC user name and password.

  6. Maximum time limits may be imposed.

  7. Look for signage indicating WiFi area.

Counseling Courses at SMC

Don't know how to study? That's ok! The counseling classes below will teach you that, and more!

Counseling 20: Student Success Class

      • 3 units (UC and CSU transferable)

      • Topics: Academic Strategies, Life Management Skills, and Learning How to Learn

      • This course provides an exploration of intellectual, psychological, social, and physical factors that impact lifelong learning, wellbeing, and success. Topics include motivation and self-efficacy; critical thinking and effective study strategies; health issues and lifestyle choices; relating to others in a diverse world; effective written and oral communication; time management; career exploration; and transfer and educational planning.

Counseling 1: Developing Learning Skills

    • This course is designed to help the students at all academic levels to improve their study skills in reading textbooks, taking notes, setting goals, preparing for examinations, and managing time. This course is offered on a credit/no credit basis only.

Counseling 12: Career Planning

    • This Career Planning class is designed to inform and assist students in making appropriate and satisfying career choices. As students, you will use self-evaluation instruments to learn about your personality in relation to the world of work, and identify your interests, values and skills. You will learn how to investigate careers of interest to you and techniques for making career decisions.
