7 days before the first day of the Fall 2017 semester is the Great American Solar Eclipse Aug 21 2017 (the last time a partial eclipse was visible from SoCal was 38 years ago in 1979 according to the LA Times). 99 years ago in 1918 was the last time the US was IN the path of totality!
According to this source, the partial eclipse will begin at 9:05 am, the maximum eclipse will be at 10:21am, and the partial eclipse will end at 11:44am.
Unfortunately, while we won't be able to see totality from SMC, here is a video of a total solar eclipse from November 13, 2012 (viewed from a narrow corridor in the Southern Hemisphere)
