For two years in a row, Coile Serves has received service grants from Youth Service of America & State Farm.
Beginning on Inter-generational Day in October 2013 and culminating on Global Youth Service Day in April 2014, Coile Serves students organized and facilitated six financial literacy classes to families within our community at our local flea market, a space where families often gather on weekends. Interviews, and classes were given both in English and Spanish, on topics of entrepreneurship, making dreams a reality, budgeting, money management, and micro-enterprise. Students also polled community members on their previous, current, and future desires dealing with agriculture.
These topics covered in the workshops at the J&J covered the Common Core Standard of integration of knowledge and ideas. Looking back over the year, I believe my students solidified their understandings of business principles and honed their 21st Century Skills of collaboration, communication, critical thinking and creativity/ innovation. Because this topic of boosting financial literacy for our community derived from my student-leaders, I feel that it was a relevant and life changing year of service for my students, our community, and myself. Thank you.
