On April 20, hundreds of students at W.R. Coile Middle School completed service projects for “Step Up & Serve,” a youth-led initiative designed to bring about positive social change and immerse students in the world of volunteering. Students participated in creative, literacy-based lessons, linked to Georgia Performance Standards, allowing the students to use writing and art to create letters of support or thanks to those who need or deserve them. Sixth graders, who study weather as part of their science curriculum, wrote letters of support to recent tornado victims. Seventh graders, who study the body systems and illnesses as part of their science curriculum, wrote get-well letters to sick children in pediatric wards of local hospitals. Finally, eighth grade, Georgia Studies scholars wrote thank you letters to military serving abroad and to our local emergency service providers (firefighters, police, and ambulance drivers, etc). We ended with a celebration and visits from our Mayor and Superintendent.
