Our district has moved away from traditional ways of measuring success that looked only at test scores in the areas of math, science, social studies, and English. For instance, one of our initiatives begun this year is
Design opportunities to engage student creativity and interests.
This Pollinator Habitat project inherently taps into students’ interests and talents as it involves nature study and being outdoors. Our students have already completed art projects and have written poems revolving around our garden work. You can feel the excitement in the room when we talk about or do our pollinator work. Students are coming to view themselves as true experts in this area. And why not? Is a person ever too young to specialize in a topic that interests them and boosts their academic knowledge?
