The late, great Ray McNair (Civil Rights era activist) asked my students and I to create a basic English course for the gentlemen who wait by the Home Depot in hopes of getting daily work. My students enjoyed the task, because it was for "a real audience". Because they were English learners themselves, they knew EXACTLY what those gentlemen needed in terms of language assistance!
