Coile Middle School Students to Open National Conference with Illustrated Stories, Thanks to Grant from AthFest Educates
On February 14 at 6pm at the UGA Conference Center’s Mahler Hall, a talented group of students from Coile Middle School will perform personal stories “illustrated” with their own photographs at the opening reception for the Journal of Language and Literacy (JoLLE) conference. The conference is organized by its student-led Editorial Board and supported by the Language and Literacy Department at UGA.
“Coile Serves,” an after-school, arts-based group that engages students in academic, career and life-skills activities is facilitating the project. Coile Serves is a volunteer run program that has been impacting the lives of young people and the community since its beginning in 2007. The group has worked on projects including spoken word performances, student-created books, and photography. With funding from an AthFest Educates mini grant, over the past two months the group has been rehearsing their stories and learning how to take artistic photos that represent or relay their narratives in visual forms through workshops with professional photographers.
There is a catered reception at 5pm, which requires conference registration; however, the student performances at 6pm are open to the public.
