Design Specification Considerations
- What do you want your project to do?
- I want to replicate Derek Hugger’s kinetic sculpture, Annulation. The three rings should oscillate in harmony and create an aesthetically appealing illusion.
- Is the project for you or someone else?
- I haven’t decided if I am going to mount the sculpture on a wall in my room, give it to my mom to put in her office, or gift it to the school (if they want it).
- If someone else, have you talk to them about design specs?
- Whether or not I keep it for myself, the design specs will not change.
- Are you considering a group project? What is your part?
- This will not be a group project.
- Will your project be inside or outside?
- Inside, but I guess it could go outside if I treated the wood.
- Will your project be portable?
- No, it must be mounted on a wall.
- Will your project connect to the Internet?
- Will your project use Bluetooth?
- I’m not planning on using Bluetooth since there is no need to control the sculpture remotely. However, I may add a component that would allow me to restart the structure after it completes its cycle.
- Does your project have intelligence (Arduino, Raspberry Pi, computer)?
- The original sculpture does not have intelligence, but in order to add electronics, I could put music to the up and down motions of the rings.
- What are your project inputs?
- What are your project outputs?
- How does your project different from the project that inspired you?
- Because the woodworking is so intricate, my first goal is to just replicate Hugger’s sculpture by following the plans exactly. After I accomplish that, I might try to change the material (i.e. acrylic) or add electronics.
- When was the inspirational project built?
- Do you have a tutorial or instructions for your project?
- Yes, I have bought the plans.
- What is the maximum that you want to spend?
- The hardware will constitute the bulk of the cost. I’ve already made a spreadsheet summing the cost of all the parts.
- What are the dimensions of your project?
- 21.6" h x 20.7" w x 7.6" d
- What materials will you use?
- Are the parts for your project still available?
- Are the tools you need for the project found in the FabLab?
- Yes- CNC machine, laser cutter, hacksaw?
- How will you hide the electronics?
- Include a panel behind wall mount
