Pre-Search Mapping Exercise
Why take the time to do pre-search mapping?
Be more intentional in thinking about search terms/phrases
Build vocabulary about the topic
Create a more robust/helpful search with better results
Be mindful of exploring variety of resources
What's the pre-search mapping process?
Track search terms/phrases
Identify sources of information
Skim and scan 2-3 articles or resources per information source
Record terms, big ideas, concepts, NOT take notes or focus on facts
See, think, and wonder with your partner
What will it look like?
Here's a sample pre-search strategy map from a library colleague:
Citing E-Books
Some of our e-book providers like Gale provide ready-made citations, just like the research databases. For others, you will need to create a citation.
Cite an e-book just as you would the print version, with a little added information about how you accessed it. A basic citation for The Gilded Age looks like this:
Curley, Robert. Renewable and Alternative Energy. New York: Britannica Educational Pub., in Association with Rosen Educational Services, 2012. Destiny Discover. Web. 15 Dec. 2016.
If you are only using a single chapter of the book, include that:
Curley, Robert. "Harnessing Water: Hydropower." Renewable and Alternative Energy. New York: Britannica Educational Pub., in Association with Rosen Educational Services, 2012. Destiny Discover. Web. 15 Dec. 2016.
In EasyBib, choose the Book tab, click the Manual Cite link, and then the Online Database tab. Complete the form and add to your works cited!
Citing Sources & Academic Integrity
Why cite sources? In addition to avoiding the consequences of plagiarism and increasing your credibility, you are participating an ongoing scholarly conversation. It is important for your audience to be able to find your sources, so they can enter into the dialogue as well.
Your school subscription to NoodleTools can help you format and track citations and the AHS Research Handbook can help with all stages of the research process.
There are three ways to get started with NoodleTools:
From Drive, click the G Suite NoodleTools button (click the Google "waffle" menu at the top right of any Google apps screen, then click "More")
Go to NoodleTools.com and enter your Spyponders username under "Access via G Suite"
Use our direct link for students: https://my.noodletools.com/logon/signin?domain=spyponders.com
The first time you enter you will need to create a new account and select your school and year of graduation. If you need help logging on please see me or check out this short tutorial.
