Week 1: Aug 15 - Aug 18

All classes will review the M170 classroom expectations and discipline policy. 

Advanced Classes, P1 AND P3: determine instrumentation and instrument choices. We should start playing by week 2, but no later than week 3. 

Beginning Classes and Symphony. Students will also learn about instrumentation, and instrument selection. Week 2, we will choose our instruments. 

What's Happening?

Week 2: Aug 21 - Aug 25

P1 and P3 We are playing and defining our technique and tone for success. Let's set the standard now to avoid worrying about proper performance practices later. 

P4, P5, and P6: Instrument demos, try outs, and choices. 

Week 3: Aug 28 - Aug 31

ALL Periods: We will discuss the Practice Card. Start filling those out and submitting them. The week 3 practice card is due September 5th. 

P1 and P3: We've began handing out sheet music. Please practice your sheet music regularly. Ask for help during nutrition or lunch or after school on Thursdays or Fridays.  

P4, P5, and P6: We will learn how to assemble instruments safely. And we will play our first notes together this week. You will also be issued worksheets, a practice book, folder, and the practice card must be filled out. If you need a practice card, let Mr. Cruz know.

Week 4: Sept 5 - Sept 8

All Classes: Make sure your music folder has your name, and class period printed clearly with pen (not marker) at the top of your folder. 

P1 and P3: We've began handing out sheet music. Please practice your sheet music regularly. Ask for help during nutrition or lunch or after school on Thursdays or Fridays.  

P4, P5, and P6: We will continue playing our first notes and we will continue with our procedures. We are not moving on until the first note sounds great! You will also be issued worksheets, a practice book, folder, and the practice card must be filled out. If you need a practice card, let Mr. Cruz know.

P5: There is a test on the parts of your instrument this Tuesday. Also, the bow grip and your posture are very important. When you perform with the correct bow grip and posture, you're setting yourself up for success. 

P5 and P6: You are expected to bring your sheet music, music book or packet, music folder, paper, pencil, and a silent reading book to class everyday. Yes, this means an extra trip to your locker before or after your PE class. Success begins with being prepared for class.

All Classes: Make sure your music folder has your name, and class period printed clearly with pen (not marker) at the top of your folder. After class you may put your folder in your class-designated music folder box.

P1: Wednesday 9/13 We will have our small group Chorale Test. Thursday 9/14 and Friday 9/15 Chair test. Chairs will be published and released 9/18.

P3: We have had our sheet music for some time, and it's time for playing tests. September 15 - test on Overture from the Royal Fireworks. You will be evaluated on dynamics, intonation, correct pitches and rhythm, appropriate use of bow

P4, P5, and P6: We will sweat the small stuff! Remember, we will learn things slowly now to learn faster later. Also, you have been issued a music packet or a book, and folder. Bring them to school EVERYDAY. Please take care of these items, and be responsible.

P5: We had our first bow grip test on Friday, Sept 8th. The bow grip is crucial. You have until October 5th to make up your bow grip test, and you may retake the test as many times as you need to before October 5th. Our next bow grip test will be verbal explanation of the bow grip. We will also have our first playing test September 15th: #4 from your packet or String Builder books. 

P6: We will have our first playing test on number 3 from our packets or Red Books. You will be evaluated on correct pitch, posture, and rhythm.

Chair Challenges: The last day for chair challenges is: September 29th. After Sept. 29th, Chair Challenges will resume October 13. 

Practice Cards: It is too late to submit Week 3 and Week 4 Practice Cards. Week 5 practice cards are due September 18 by the end of the school day. Late practice cards will not be graded.

ALL CLASSES: Make sure you turn in your School Activity Permission Slip. The last day to turn in these permission slips is September 19 by the end of the day. Make sure your name is on the slip, your 3rd and 4th period teacher signs it, and put it in the green box. 

ALL CLASSES: You can make up any test as many times as you need to until the last day of regular instruction of the semester. 

P0: Jazz, We have our exchange concert with Hamilton on Wednesday, Sept. 20th. Help set up during nutrition. 

P1: We will continue our chair testing on Monday, and continue our run-throughs of Black Forest.   

P3: We will continue our Brandenburg playing tests on Monday.
