Private Lessons - Instructors

Private lessons or additional instruction enhance your learning on your instrument. Having a private tutor or instructor is encouraged, not mandatory. A private music instructor will reinforce the instruction taught to your child at school and ensure no bad habits are developed. The most relevant band and orchestra programs have at least a 50% or more participation rate in regular private lessons.

With the exception of your suggested materials, music instruction is free everyday. The best way to describe the importance of private lessons is to think like the many types of medical doctors.

For example, you have your general practitioner or family doctor who you see when first experience health issues. However, if you have problems with your skin, your family practice doctor will more than likely refer you to a dermatologist.

In music, Mr. Cruz is your general practitioner. Mr. Cruz makes sure everyone learns the general concepts of music making. However, a specialist, such as a professional violinist, flute player, trombonist, etc., makes sure that all concepts related to the instrument you are learning are in line with what is being taught at school, and that no bad habits associated with learning your instrument are developed.

In almost every relevant and comprehensive music program, the top student musicians are the students dedicated to practicing their instrument on a daily or regular basis and who take private lessons.

When searching for private lesson instructors, it never hurts to ask if they offer a free trial lesson. Most music stores that provide lessons offer a first lesson free, but you need to inquire.
