Rent or Purchase

Renting Instruments

Hale Charter Academy has a limited inventory of school instruments available. School instruments are available first to students and families who are unable to rent or purchase an instrument.

Students are encouraged to rent or purchase an instrument before deciding to use a school instrument. Flute, Clarinet, Alto Sax, Tenor Sax, Trumpet, Trombone, Percussion, Violin, Viola, Cello are the most commonly rented or purchased instruments.

We do not expect the following instruments to be rented or purchased due to their cost and size: Double Bass, Tuba, Baritone, Euphonium, and Bari Sax.

Cello and Upright Bass Rentals

Most students who rent their own bass or cello keep their rental at home and use school instruments during the day to avoid transporting it to and from school. If you rent your own cello or bass, you may bring your rental to school for concerts. Take care of using school cellos and basses. Unrepairable or lost instruments will result in a charge and the instrument must be replaced according to a prescribed and approved list of instruments by LAUSD.

If you are unable to rent a cello or a bass, and if transportation is an issue, room M170 is open during nutrition, lunch, and after school. Simply make an appointment with Mr. Cruz if you’re coming in to practice.

Purchasing Instruments

Please speak with Mr. Cruz before purchasing your own instrument. Instrument prices vary. Just because an instrument is cheap, does not necessarily mean it will sound good, or last long. Also, the less well-known brands are more difficult to repair and replacement parts are hard to find or do not exist. Most repair shops will not repair a brand they are not familiar with. You get what you pay for when purchasing an instrument. Please speak with Mr. Cruz about reputable instrument brands.

Please avoid the cheap ebay, or amazon instruments. Also avoid buying instruments from discount stores. They are not high quality and have a tendency to break. Many repair shops will not even touch the instrument or attempt to repair the instrument. Prior to buying an instrument, please consult with Mr. Cruz.
