Daffodil Blub Planting at American Legion

Post date: Nov 19, 2016 3:13:13 PM

Wanted to report in on daffodil bulb planting today at American Legion.

The Benton County Sheriff's Office Trustees (10 men) arrived with their 2 custodial deputies at approximately 8:45am at the American Legion. Cathy Downard, Mary O'Brien and I were there to greet them and 'supervise' the planting of 175 'Bella Vista ' daffodil bulbs. As promised, they came with all tools necessary and were eager to listen to the planting instruction. We had asked for their help, first of all because the Legion has used them before and secondly, the task seemed daunting given that 6" of mulch had to be moved, landscape cloth removed and then dig in the typical Bella Vista hard and rocky ground. We also had VWW deliver a small load of sludge to put under and on top of bulbs, which had to be shoveled and wheel burrowed.

Well I was quite pleasantly surprised at how hard the men worked wielding rakes, picks, box cutters and post hole diggers as we disbursed the bulbs and provided additional guidance. They were extremely polite, and very eager to make sure the planting was done correctly. We finished quickly, at approximately 10am, and they dawned brooms and a blower and were very diligent about cleaning up nicely. They did not really want to head back to the jail, so they commenced weeding and removing leaves from all the other flower beds at the Legion while waiting for their pizza lunch provided by the Legion.

Cathy and Mary and I, set the plates, napkins, cups, ice , soda and pizza boxes out and they lined up and filed thru then sat down at the picnic tables out back. They sat there, plates of pizza in front of them, and waited for each man, including the deputies, to be seated with their plates, before saying a blessing out loud and then, beginning to eat.....I spoke to the group and thanked them for their work. We showed them pictures of the daffodils from our phones and explained our community wide mission, they listened very attentively and then I even talked to them about milkweed (can't help myself if I have a captive audience)

I am so glad that I was there to experience this and once again left a Garden Club activity feeling enriched beyond words...WAY BEYOND DAFFODIL PLANTING...
