The school-based Technology and Living is a compulsory basic curriculum in key stage 3 and an elective in key stage 4. The learning targets of the two key stages are as follows:
Participate actively and responsibly as individuals and family members;
Be aware of the importance of a healthy lifestyle, including nutrition and a balanced diet, to personal growth and development;
Understand the principles of food preparation and processing;
Explore and identify the characteristics, care, and suitability of different fabrics;
Appreciate the functional and aesthetic aspects of a design;
Understand the changes of individuals within various family structures and throughout the family cycle;
Understand the nature and properties of food and the cultural, social, and economic influences on the development of food and nutritional science, food technology, and food product; and
Understand the nature of fashion design, the characteristics of fibres and fabrics, and the process of basic clothing construction.

Learning areas include “Family Dimension”, “Consumer Behaviour in Food and Fashion Choices”, “Food Science and Technology” and “Fashion, Clothing, and Textiles”. The learning targets of each learning area are as follows:

Understand the physical and chemical properties and functional nature in food preparation of nutrients.
Hygiene and safety habits are cultivated through the practical application of the principles of food selection and preparation;
Lifestyle and cultural influences can be reflected through the selection and preparation of food and meals;
Introduce technological advances in food processing; and
Individuals’ and families’ well-being can be enhanced by using suitable practical skills in the selection and use of pre-prepared food products.
Understand the selection, use, and care of textiles are improved by a knowledge and application of their functional and aesthetic properties;
Understand the properties and characteristic of fibres, yarns, and fabrics;
Understand the daily application of textile products enhanced by scientific and technological processes;
Understand that the textile materials can be used to identify the cultural group and reflect the nature of the culture;
Understand that a culture can use textiles to communicate messages about the culture to those who are not part of the culture;
Understand that the design and construction of clothing is enhanced by a knowledge of elements and principles of design, functional properties of textiles, and suitable construction techniques; and
Understand how the elements and principles of design and functional properties of textiles are applied when designing and constructing the clothing.
