Gail Halvorsen, Transmitter of Joy

-I chose to paint about Gail Halvorsen because his story is the epitome of what everyone should be like. Gail saw these children living in Berlin, saw their dread and even though he knew it wasn't a lot, he gave them candy trying to cheer them up. He found a small sliver of joy to give, and it illustrates how something normal to us, like candy, can change the world for others in difficult areas/times. People like Gail make the world a better place to live, brightening up peoples days. Compassion is a common trait for humans to have, but Gail decided to go above and beyond and constantly try to cheer the townspeople up.
-The process of creating this work changed the outlook of my life because I have been more susceptible to be more joyous, even more compassionate to my peers. I started just giving people a little smile through the halls if I see them, just trying to spread some happiness. I think knowing how people worked to help others in tough times, with no recognition can be a hard concept to hold onto. Furthermore, I think that it has also made me more open to others trying to cheer me up.
