Purpose : Use a 3” x 3” post-it as a template to create a multiple-sided, lidded box out of slabs. Tie together the different sides and lid of the box with connected shapes/concepts.
Write about the idea you utilized on your box. How did you tie together the all sides, top and handle? What surface-altering technique did you use? What element (s) makes the viewer want to look around your box?
For my box, I used the life cycle of a butterfly as the theme. Each side shows a different stage: egg, caterpillar, chrysalis, and butterfly. I connected all the sides by carving flowers on the corners that wrap around, so the design flows all the way around the box. The top of the box is plain, and the handle is a butterfly, which ties in with the final stage of the life cycle. I used carving as my surface-altering technique to show the details of each stage and the flowers. The flowers wrapping around the corners and the handle make people want to look at all the sides.
How do you feel about your box? Why do you like it (or not like it)? If you were to create a slab form again, what would you do and why would you do that?
I feel good about how my box turned out. I like the butterfly theme and how each side shows a different part of its life. The carved details came out nice, and I think the flower corners helped bring everything together. If I made a slab form again, I would focus more on making the shapes smoother and the edges line up better. I’d do that to make it look more neat and professional.
