Purposes:
To understand and demonstrate how to make a good movie poster
To visually capture people’s attention through a movie poster
To understand how designers create suspense and a particular mood in a poster design
I feel like one thing that designers can do to create a mood in designs is using color. My everyday object was an eye, which may seem boring at first. However, if you take a close look at an eye, then it is actually quite astounding. The eye I chose for the Gateway poster was a cool teal-esque color, so I surrounded it by more cool colors (blues and purples) to make it even more astounding. For the Through their Eyes poster, I decided to pick animals with very different kinds (and colors) of eyes. The brown of the chameleon, the deep blue of the beluga whale, the soft yellow of the tiger, and the pitch black of the bird all made me realize just how different things can be, even though they are fundamentally the same.
The Gateway poster is a sci-fi about a portal in space with a glowing eye at the center, and a valiant hero (me :)) standing on a cliff side anticipating what will happen next. The Through their Eyes poster is simple, it’s a documentary about seeing the lives of animals “through their eyes” (as the poster name suggests. In both cases, using the glowing rings and zoomed-in shots of the animals, I was able to make the eye stand out in both posters, and create two posters where the eye is the centerpiece. In the Gateway poster, the eye gives off a feeling of suspense, and in the Through their Eyes poster, the eyes give off a feeling of wonder.
