Two of the most important concepts I learned this semester: Two important concepts I learned this semester are value and scale. Value is important because it lets the viewer make important distinctions between things. Value makes drawings, paintings, and other things much more visible because without them paintings become a huge blob of colors, which is even worse when only black and white are being used to paint. Value was important in the Value Self Portrait and Final Still Life because it allowed me to distinguish between certain things like my face and hair, and the gourd and the onion:
Scale is important because it can make artwork look like either a very accurate representation of something or a dramatic interpretation of a real-life thing. This allowed me to create dramatic interpretations like the Mange's Metalmark Butterfly's wings in the ceramic bowl, as well as replicate actual things like the still life (see above).
The Assignment I am Most Proud of: I am most proud of my final still life for two reasons. The first is that going into this assignment, this was the one I felt the least confident about. I thought I would totally flunk it because I wasn't accurate enough, or I didn't have enough value. However, after a few assignments like the imitation drawings and the one-point perspective bedroom, I got a bit of a confidence boost, and I felt way better about the whole thing. It was the most drastic worst feeling to best feeling change about an assignment that I felt all year.Â
The second reason why I thought this was my best work was because of the new techniques I discovered. All year I have had trouble finding how to integrate more value into my artworks, but I haven't been able to find a technique that speaks to me. But I finally found one, that being stippling. Stippling was such an interesting and cool way to represent value in my drawing, and I will use it in the future for an projects like this.
