Students were taught about the procedures of P.E. class. Since the location of class will not always be consistent (sometimes we will be in the gym and sometimes we will be outside), it is important to reinforce several of the procedures. Students participated in activities that practiced starting and stopping on the signal (music), finding a personal home base spot, and traveling safely in general space. This will allow students to play safely whether inside the gym or outside. Each class learned the 3 rules of the gym.
3 Rules of the Gym
1). Respect Yourself
[Stay on your feet, wear appropriate shoes, have fun and do your best]
2). Respect Others
[Listen to ideas, use good sportsmanship]
3). Respect This Place
[Treat equipment nicely]
Question of the Week
How can I help create a positive learning environment for my classmates and myself?
K & 1st
Kindergarten & 1st Graders worked on traveling in their personal space and traveling near others in general space through 3 activities. They pretended that they were fish and followed along on silly adventures. This activity works on moving safely in open spaces, returning to a designated spot, and following the motions in the song. Below is the video to play at home! They also traveled around "general space" as airplanes and practiced problem solving through a round of Rock, Paper, Scissors. They finished class by traveling across the gym imitating various animals (ex: horses, bear, giraffe, elephant, dinosaurs...)
2nd,3rd,4th
2nd, 3rd, and 4th graders interacted with many members of their class through a "Partner Mixer" activity. They were challenged to find a different partner each round, introduce themselves, and perform a motion (Air High 5, Air Low 5, Toe Taps). They continued to interact with classmates through a friendly competition of Rock, Paper, Scissors Knockout. Their final challenge was to work with their small team to complete "Pass the Chicken," including:
Level 1). Pass with only your hands
Level 2). Pass with only your elbows
and
Level 3). Pass with only your feet
5th & 6th
5th and 6th graders were welcomed into the gym and got started on activities right away. Their first activity was "Partner Mixer." On the music cue, they traveled at their own speed around the edge of the gym. When the music stopped, they came to the middle and found a partner. With these partners, they did different handshakes (Air High 5, Air Low 5, Toe Taps, Turkey, and Lumberjack). Next, they found their assigned home base spots and learned the rules of the gym.
5th and 6th graders proceeded to interact with various partners by playing Rock, Paper, Scissors Knockout then finished the day with a team relay and balance challenge. Our #1 piece of equipment last year was pool noodles and the old noodles have been cut up to make noodle "slices." Students were challenged to stack them between 2 hands and travel across the gym. If the noodles fell, their entire team could go out to help. This activity teaches that the more helpful they are to their team, the more successful the team will be!
