This was a short month filled with multiple classes quaranting, but we packed a lot in! Enjoy the Winter Recess and spend some time having fun outside.
Kindergarteners spent 2 days using our large parachute. We also got to do some creative cup stacking as vaccine clinics forced us into the classroom. We practiced taking turns with a new tag game and ended the month with some winter games.
What SHAPE America standards are we working on?
Performs locomotor skills in response to teacher-led creative dance (S1.E5.K)
Moves in personal space to a rhythm (S2.E1.Kb)
What are we doing?
Warmups:
Crazy Freeze Dance: This works the same as typical Freeze Dance but on each stop the teacher says a name and that student chooses a silly pose for the rest of the class to copy
Hula Hoop Timers: The student chooses an exercise and then spins their hula hoop (like a top). They do the exercise until the hoop stops spinning and then chooses again.
Activities:
Parachute: Students worked to create waves, identified colors, crawled under and on top of the parachute, climbed the "mountain," played Cat & Mouse, and launched objects like popcorn.
Spaghetti & Meatball Tag: The taggers have either a pool noodle (spaghetti) or a ball (meatball). Everyone else tries to avoid getting tagged. If they are tagged, they do 5 of an exercise and they reenter the game.
Present Delivery: This is a relay activity. Groups run to their team's colored dice and roll it. If they roll a low number (1,2,3) they can bring a bean bag back to their team's hoop. In level 2, they practice giving presents by bringing a bean bag to the team whose number they roll.
What SHAPE America standards are we working on?
1st Grade:
Combines locomotor and nonlocomotor skills in a teacher-designed dance (S1.E5.1)
Moves in self-space and general space in response to designated beats or rhythms (S2.E1.1)
2nd Grade:
Performs a teacher and/or student designed rhythmic activity with correct response to simple rhythms (S1.E5.2)
Combines locomotor skills in general space to a rhythm (S2.E1.2)
Combines shapes, levels, and pathways into simple travel sequences (S2.E2.2)
What are we doing?
Warmups:
Line Your Manners: Students move around the gym on the blue lines. When they reach another person, they play Rock, Paper, Scissor. The losing challenger steps aside and uses their best manners to let the winning challenger go past first, then continues moving around on the lines. No one is out in this game.
Activities:
Parachute: Students worked to create waves, identified colors, crawled under and on top of the parachute, climbed the "mountain," played Cat & Mouse, and launched objects like popcorn.
Present Delivery: This is a relay activity. Groups run to their team's colored dice and roll it. If they roll a low number (1,2,3) they can bring a bean bag back to their team's hoop. In level 2, they practice giving presents by bringing a bean bag to the team whose number they roll.
Bean Bag Slide: This game has two sides and students are split into two teams. When the game starts, students can pick up any beanbag from their side and slide it UNDER the orange tape to hit someone’s feet. If they see a beanbag coming, they can jump or dodge out of the way. If a beanbag hits they feet, do 5 ski jumps to get back in the game.
Unlock the Igloo: Teams line up at a cone for a relay. The first person runs down and rolls the dice. If they get a low number (1,2,3), they can take a hula hoop back to their team. When a team gets 6 hula hoops, they will be able to build an “igloo.” After they have built an igloo, they can try to fit inside or pick it up and move it.

S1.E5.3 Performs teacher selected and developmentally appropriate movement patterns
S1.E17.3 Dribbles and travels in general space at slow to moderate jogging speed, with control of ball and body
4th Grade:
S1.E20.4 Dribbles with hands or feet in combination with other skills (eg. passing, receiving, shooting)
S2.E1.4a Applies the concept of open spaces to combination skills involving traveling )e.g. dribbling and traveling)

What are we doing?
Warmups:
Best Foot Forward: Students find a partner and decide who will get points if they pick the SAME thing and who will get points if they pick the OPPOSITE thing. They face each other and start with their feet together. Jump in place and count “1,2,3, Show.” On show, land with 1 foot in front of the other. If the same foot was chosen, then the point is awarded to the person who chose SAME. If a different foot was chosen, then the point is awarded to the person who chose OPPOSITE. Play until someone reaches 5 points, then switch partners.
Unlock the Igloo: Teams line up at a cone for a relay. The first person runs down and rolls the dice. If they get a low number (1,2,3), they can take a hula hoop back to their team.
