Kindergarteners spent the first half of November practicing their catching skills then added scoops to practice their throwing and catching skills together.
What SHAPE America standards are we working on?
Drops a ball and catches it before it bounces twice (S1.E16.Ka)
Catches a large ball tossed by a skilled thrower (S1.E16.Kb)
What are we doing?
Warmups:
"Line Up Song" by The Kiboomers: Each day, the "Star of the Day" (determined by the classroom teacher) leads the class into and around the gym. They get to practice decision making and leadership as they choose the direction that the class walks. It's been fun to see their personalities shine through and their confidence grow when it's their turn to be the leader!
River Bank: Based on a South African game, students practice their listening skills as they jump into and out of the "river" based on a set of commands.
Activities:
Catching Stations: Students explored catching with all types of balls. They compared what it felt like to catch bouncy balls, light balls, plastic balls, and rubber balls.
Hungry, Hungry Monsters: Our "monsters" stood inside hula hoops on the far end of the gym and tried to "eat" by catching balls thrown by the rest of the class.
Scoops: Students applied their throwing and catching skills with a new manipulative object (that looks a lot like a giant ice cream scoop!).
Cup Stacking: A vaccine clinic + a rainstorm meant that we did P.E. in the classroom one day! Students worked on fine motor skills and collaboration by building cup towers.
Build A Turkey: Creativity was on display during this activity! Students used P.E. equipment in a different way to create "turkeys" for Thanksgiving.
1st and 2nd graders worked on dribbling with their feet this week.
What SHAPE America standards are we working on?
1st Grade:
Taps or dribbles a ball using the inside of the foot while walking in general space (S1.E18.1)
Approaches a stationary ball and kicks it forward, demonstrating 2 of the 5 critical elements of a mature kicking pattern (S1.E21.1)
2nd Grade:
Dribbles with the feet in general space with control of the ball and body (S1.E18.2)
What are we doing?
Warmups:
Hoop Tag: Taggers practice using different parts of their foot to kick a hula hoop along the ground and tag everyone else's feet. Students can jump or dodge out of the way to avoid getting tagged.
Walk & Jog: Students warm-up by practicing speed changes every time they get to a designated spot.
Activities:
Dribble and Freeze: Students keep the ball close to their body as they dribble around the gym. They want it to be close enough so they can trap the ball when the music stops.
Partner Bridge: Half of the class stands with their feet apart to create a "bridge." The other half earns points by dribbling their ball through a bridge.
Ring Soccer: Once we have practiced using all parts of our foot and keeping the ball under control, students dribble around the gym and try to trap their ball inside a ring.
Spot Shot: Students work through the cues of kicking a ball as they aim at a large, medium, then small goal.
Dash For Cash: A highlight of our month! We ended November with guided free choice. Students could earn $1 Monopoly Dollar for every lap around the gym. After earning $, they could visit the "store" to rent equipment. Some rentals cost more than others so students could complete more laps or combine with a classmate.
What SHAPE America standards are we working on?
3rd Grade:
Dribbles with the feet in general space at slow to moderate jogging speed with control of ball and body (S1.E18.3)
4th Grade:
Dribbles with hands or feet in combination with other skills (eg. passing, receiving, shooting) (S1.E20.4)
Dribbles with the feet in general space with control of ball and body while increasing and decreasing speed (S1.E18.4)
Dribbles in general space with control of ball and body while increasing and decreasing speed (S1.E17.4b)
What activities are we doing?

Activities:
Soccer Dribbling: Students keep the ball close to their body as they dribble around the gym. They want it to be close enough so they can trap the ball when the music stops.
Squirrels in a Tree: Students work on dribbling with accuracy and control to find an open hula hoop, as a "squirrel" finding a "tree"
Ring Soccer: Once we have practiced using all parts of our foot and keeping the ball under control, students dribble around the gym and try to trap their ball inside a ring.
Bumper Ball: Applying our game strategies from last month, students try to defend their ball as taggers work to bump it out of bounds.

These grades were affected by quarantines, early releases, and no school days so our time together was limited this month.
What SHAPE America standards are we working on?
5th Grade:
Dribbles with hands or feet with mature patterns in a variety of small-sided game forms (S1.E20.5)
6th Grade:
Foot-dribbles or dribbles with an implement with control, changing speed and direction in a variety of practice tasks (S1.M9.6)
