Description:  This course is an individualized, concepts-based, one-semester course designed to give students the knowledge and skills necessary to self-asses, create, conduct, evaluate, and redesign personal fitness programs. The course is a combination of classroom and activity-based learning activities with a focus on proper nutrition and the mastery of skills and concepts necessary for students to become accomplished monitors of the personal lifetime fitness. Through participation, student will learn to compare the fitness benefits in a variety of individual and team activities. Student will become proficient in the use of a variety of assessments, measurement devices, exercise equipment, web and community resources and computer software. Assigned reading and writing assignments which include activity journals and portfolios. Course will broaden the physical education experience and contribute to the literacy of the student. This course is required for graduation, no substitutions, including participation in athletics.

Description:  This is for you if you are looking for something different that adds variety and is suitable for all fitness levels. This class uses a rope system to utilize body weight as resistance while lifting and pushing your body in various ways. This form of functional training maximizes strength development, stability and endurance while toning and defining the body. Combined with cardiovascular exercise it offers a well rounded full body workout. This low impact class is excellent for building core strength, mobility, flexibility, muscular endurance, and improving balance.

Description: Good choice for beginners. Level 1 Hatha yoga is a slower paced flow class geared towards those new to yoga. Time is spent breaking down sun salutations A and B and other poses fundamental to Hatha yoga. There are approximately 200 poses with modifications that are introduced and practiced. Props and modification offered for proper alignment and ease into the postures.

Description:  Recommended for students who have completed Yoga 1 or has at least 3 months of prior experience in Hatha or vinyasa practice. Yoga 2 or intermediate yoga classes explore complex movements and sequences which includes backbends, inverted postures, deeper hip opening, twists and forward folds. The teacher will encourage rest periods and offer modifications as needed to complete the intermediate class.

Description: Students will explore the fundamentals of different styles of hip hop including popping, gliding, and breakdancing. Students will develop strength, endurance, coordination, flexibility, and performance qualities (focus, confidence, artistic intent). Students will be exposed to current styles of choreography within different styles of hip hop. They will also be introduced to the history of hip hop dance and it’s origins. Students will have the opportunity to practice freestyle, choreography, and performance. Students will need to wear sneakers and loose clothing that allows for a wide range of movement.

Description:  Students will develop a foundation in the skills of technique, musicality, strength, coordination, endurance, and performance qualities (focus, confidence, artistic intent) while enjoying time with friends. This co-ed dance class teaches various forms of social dancing. All of the social dances taught are designed to give students dance experience that they can share and enjoy on any social dance occasion. Emphasis is placed on foxtrot, cha cha, waltz, and triple swing.

Description: Intermediate ballroom dance class. Students will continue to develop the skills of technique, musicality, strength, coordination, endurance, and performance qualities (focus, confidence, artistic intent). This co-ed dance class teaches various forms of partner dancing. In addition to focusing on intermediate steps and learning new partner dances; emphasis is placed on learning choreography and performing opportunities.

Description:  This advanced level dance course builds dance knowledge and skills in technique, improvisation, choreography, artistic expression, performance, history, culture, life skills, and connections to other curricular areas. Both students and professional dancers will develop choreography to perform for the school and community. Entrance to this course is by audition, and auditions will be held in the Spring. Requirements include extra performances and practice outside of school hours.
