Activities to Choose From For All Grades

A special song to start out your week! Hey There my friends!

Book Club

Share and Take Turns by Cheri J. Meiners Learn about how to share! What are the different ways a person can share? This week's "Book Club" title breaks down sharing into the different types and invites you to talk with your child on what to do and what to say to join and invite others to share and take turns.

Recreational SEL

Ice Cream Puffy Paint Craft! What does a Puffy Paint Craft have to do with social emotional learning? I'm so glad you asked! This fun task will help your child learn planning and organizing skills as well as provide practice with focusing all of which are key components to learning and problem solving. One must use the "STOP Skill" or Stop; Take Time; Observe Your Feelings and Proceed Mindfully in order to follow directions. This is also true when navigating rough patches with friends. Help your child as much as he or she needs to complete the project - It does not have to be perfect BUT you do have to have fun!

Field Trip!

Habitat Exploration What makes a habitat? What do people need to live? Explore your back yard with your child using the five senses and take time to find different habitats. How many habitats are in the back yard? Help your child make connections with his or her own habitat. Make it mindful! Pause to observe and ask your child, what do you see? Smell? Hear? Feel? Do you have a garden, or berries? Ask your child to describe what he or she tastes? Extension: Collect samples from nature or interesting evidence of your back yard habitat and bring it inside to create a picture!

Optional Fun Activities

Listen to My Brain learn the words and sing along! By learning the lyrics, your child will learn about his or her brain! Friends who have attended Naquag are likely to recognize the song and our music teacher Mrs. Gough's singing voice! For parents, here is the link to lesson one of the Mind Up curriculum. Many teachers and myself have begun to use parts of this curriculum as part of our social emotional learning at Naquag. Enjoy! Mind Up Lesson One, The Hawn Foundation

Book Club Extra! Take a moment to enjoy this fun children's story about how each of us are special. It's Okay to be Different by Todd Parr As you know, self awareness is an important element of social emotional learning. Help your child reflect: “What makes me unique and special? What am I good at; What do I enjoy doing in my spare time?” Have them think of a time when differences between friends became clear. Think about your family, what makes your family special? What holidays do you enjoy together? Talk with your children about any number of ways the family and even the individuals in the family are unique!
