Lilly's Purple Plastic Purse by Kevin Henkes

"Lilly loved School" but watch what happens when she is distracted by her new purple plastic purse and its contents and she forgets to use her whole body to listen to Mr. Slinger.

Help Lilly Use Whole Body Listening!

Tell Lilly what she needs to do to be a Whole Body Listener using the chart below. For example, "Lilly, you need to use your brain to listen by thinking about what Mr. Slinger is saying."

Whole Body Listening from Acting with Purpose

Howard B. Wigglebottom Learns to Listen by Howard Binkow

"Howard just doesn't listen." Listen to the story and think about what parts of Howard's body he should be using to help him listen to his teacher.

Mindfulness

Mindfulness exercises can be done at any time! I generally guide the students in the beginning and at the end of each lesson. These brain based exercises can help bodies and brains remain calm and focused. This year's series of mindfulness exercises largely came from a collection titled "Little Renegades."

Mindful Owl

Stand or sit like an owl with big wings at your sides. Relax your shoulders. Breathe in and bring your big wings up. Breathe out and bring your big wings down slowly as you release your breath. Repeat two more times.

Recreational SEL

The Biscotti Kid

Here is a Naquag favorite! Watch how Cookie Monster learns how to use his whole body to listen. "Eyes watch. Ears listen. Voice quiet. Body calm" is a nice way to remind our children to use their whole bodies to listen and stay focused.

Adam Parker - Paying Attention

Join Mr. Parker in discussion and song about the importance of using our eyes and ears to pay attention. This month, our lessons will be all about listening and what a better way than to learn a song to help children remember!

Lyrics

"It starts with reading bodies and faces but don’t forget the situation the world can give us so many clues so what are you going to do

Be a detective, be a social detective use your eyes for watching ears for listening and reading the room."

For Fun!

Make a "Give Thanks Jar"

GIVE THANKS JAR

Decorate a Mason Jar with ribbons, paper, stickers, glitter...anything around the house. Have members of the family write the things and people they are most thankful for on a small piece of paper and place in the jar. (There is no limit to the number of things and people one can be thankful for!)

After dinner, or when everyone has gathered, go around the circle and allow each person to pull out a piece of paper (it can be one that was written by someone else) and read what was written to the whole group. You can always take a moment of pause, reflection and make connections with each other as you go around.

Supplies: Mason jar and items around the house to decorate
