Worland - The Warrior and Lady Warrior wrestlers competed in Cody and Powell for their regional tournament the weekend of February 21.
Both boys and girls gave it their best effort to get in the state tournament held in Casper this weekend with the top 8 people in each weight class going to state to compete for a state title.
WHS Wrestling Coach Josh Garcia said 16 from the team qualified for state, including a first place for Kade Garcia, third place for Cerenity Quintana and Ray Rice, and fourth place qualifications for Luciano Vazquez and Sabrina Gentzler.
WHS Wrestling Coach Ryan Utterback said Garcia won all his regional matches by pin, and the girls did very well. With 50 percent of the Worland girls qualifying.
"Lyla geis, Brynlee Roady, Hailey Wall all wrestled very well and all missed qualifying by one match. It should be noted that the girls regional was big and most weight classes had over 20 wrestlers," Utterback said. "We are excited about the potential of the individuals that made it to state. Our regional placers have a good chance to medal at state, and we have some qualifiers that we think could upset some of the higher seeded kids at state. Kade Garcia as a regional champion gets a high seed and would be a favorite to get into the state championship match in his weight class."
Also qualifying for state are Leona Vickers, Brekyn Crippen Keller Dehmal , Kabre Miller, Logan Anderson, J.J. Espionoza, Lucas Ramirez, Charlie Turner, Barrett Rice, Danner Glanz, Luis Monreal.

Worland- The Warriors wrestled at two competitions within the past week—a duel at home against Greybull on the eighth and a tournament in Douglas on the ninth and tenth.
At the Greybull duel, the Warriors were not able to pull out the win, which was partially due to illness and injury, according to Head Coach Josh Garcia. Many of the Warriors had not wrestled their opponents before, which created another hurdle. Many of the matchups gave Worland an advantage, such as WHS Junior Leona Vickers, who won her match 12-2.
The Douglas tournament, which was held on Friday and Saturday after the duel in Worland, raised the team's hopes with more succes especially from the Lady Warriors, who placed eighth out of the total 21 girls’ teams.
WHS Senior Ray Rice said, “I made it to the second day.” Rice was able to gain enough confidence to continue winning his matches, making him successful.
Garcia said, “Our focus this week is going to be getting better- staying mentally is physically tough. Last week we had a tough loss to Greybull; injury and illness was a factor.”
With the team feeling better this week, they are ready to take on Powell and Green River and bring home some wins. A few of the Warriors are feeling slightly nervous about the new matchups that they might face this week.
“We got to wrestle some great competition that's going to make us better,” Garcia noted.
The Warriors have been hard at practice, “working on not getting taken down,” according to WHS Freshman Kaden Matthesen.
WHS Freshmen Brekyn Crippen and Parker Whitehead say they are working this week on getting off the bottom.
WHS Junior Cerinity Quintana wants to “continue focusing on getting better at the little things” for her tournaments this week in Powell and Green River.
The team heads to Green River for the weekend competition.
